Google Science Fair 2015: what will you try?

The 2015 Google Science Fair has now started! To learn more about entry details, prizes follow along on Google+.

Science is about observing and experimenting. It’s about exploring unanswered questions, solving problems through curiosity, learning as you go and always trying again.

That’s the spirit behind the fifth annual Google Science Fair, kicking off today. Together with LEGO Education, National Geographic, Scientific American and Virgin Galactic, we’re calling on all young researchers, explorers, builders, technologists and inventors to try something ambitious. Something imaginative, or maybe even unimaginable. Something that might just change the world around us.

From now through May 18, students around the world ages 13-18 can submit projects online across all scientific fields, from biology to computer science to anthropology and everything in between. Prizes include $100,000 in scholarships and classroom grants from Scientific American and Google, a National Geographic Expedition to the Galapagos, an opportunity to visit LEGO designers at their Denmark headquarters, and the chance to tour Virgin Galactic’s new spaceship at their Mojave Air and Spaceport. This year we’re also introducing an award to recognize an Inspiring Educator, as well as a Community Impact Award honoring a project that addresses an environmental or health challenge.

It’s only through trying something that we can get somewhere. Flashlights required batteries, then Ann Makosinski tried the heat of her hand. His grandfather would wander out of bed at night, until Kenneth Shinozuka tried a wearable sensor. The power supply was constantly unstable in her Indian village, so Harine Ravichandran tried to build a different kind of regulator. Previous Science Fair winners have blown us away with their ideas. Now it’s your turn.

Big ideas that have the potential to make a big impact often start from something small. Something that makes you curious. Something you love, you’re good at, and want to try.

Google Science Fair 2015 - À vous de jouer !

La science repose sur l’observation et l’expérimentation. Faire avancer la science, c’est explorer des questions jusqu’ici sans réponses, apprendre sur le tas et mettre à profit notre curiosité pour tenter de résoudre des problèmes.

C’est dans cet état d’esprit que nous lançons aujourd’hui la cinquième édition annuelle du concours Google Science Fair. En partenariat avec LEGO Education, National Geographic, Scientific American et Virgin Galactic, nous mettons au défi de jeunes chercheurs, explorateurs, bâtisseurs, technophiles et inventeurs en tout genre pour qu’ils donnent le meilleur d’eux-mêmes et nous proposent un projet ambitieux, innovant, ou tout bonnement inimaginable. Un projet qui pourrait bien changer notre monde.

À partir d’aujourd’hui et jusqu’au 18 mai, des étudiants du monde entier âgés de 13 à 18 ans vont pouvoir soumettre leurs projets en ligne dans des domaines scientifiques variés tels que la biologie, l’informatique ou encore l’anthropologie. Parmi les prix qui viendront récompenser les lauréats, Scientific American et Google décerneront 100 000 USD en bourses d’études et en subventions pour les classes, National Geographic proposera une expédition aux Îles Galápagos, l’équipe de conception LEGO organisera une rencontre au siège du Danemark et Virgin Galactic offrira une visite guidée de leur nouvel astronef au port spatial de Mojave, en Californie. Cette année, un nouveau prix viendra distinguer un éducateur qui a su susciter l’inspiration chez ses élèves. Nouveau également, le prix Community Impact récompensera un projet axé sur un enjeu environnemental ou sanitaire.

C’est en expérimentant que l’on fait avancer les choses. Les réveils sont pour beaucoup d’entre nous difficiles, Guillaume Rolland, finaliste français du Google Science Fair 2014, a imaginé un reveil olfactif pour rendre ce moment plus agréable. Les lampes de poche ne fonctionnaient qu’avec des piles, jusqu’à ce qu’Ann Makosinski ait l’idée d’exploiter la chaleur de sa main. Atteint de la maladie d’Alzheimer, le grand-père de Kenneth Shinozuka faisait parfois des fugues en pleine nuit, jusqu’à ce que son petit-fils crée un capteur portable capable d’alerter sa famille. Harine Ravichandran, elle, a conçu une nouvelle génération de régulateurs pour mettre fin aux pannes électriques dans son village d’Inde. La créativité des anciens lauréats de Google Science Fair a dépassé tout ce que nous avions pu imaginer. Aujourd’hui, à vous de prendre le relais.

Bien souvent, les idées les plus prometteuses naissent d’un petit quelque chose qui a éveillé votre curiosité. Une passion, un talent, une envie.
