Australian Families See YouTube as an Important Learning Partner

We’ve frequently heard from educators in Australia and around the world that YouTube is a valuable teaching tool. 94% of teachers surveyed globally have used YouTube in their role as a teacher, and 84% of teachers surveyed in Australia use YouTube on at least a monthly basis to help their students learn 1 . Now, new research from Oxford Economics, published in the 2024 YouTube Impact Report, unveils another critical dimension: Australian parents overwhelmingly trust YouTube for high-quality content that supports both their children’s learning and entertainment.
Parents Endorse YouTube's Educational Value

The new research from Oxford Economics reveals that 72% of parents who use YouTube agree that YouTube (or YouTube Kids for those under 13) helps their children learn, and 79% of parents who use YouTube agree that YouTube (or YouTube Kids for those under 13) provides quality content for their children's learning and/or entertainment. This isn't about fleeting trends or a mindless scroll; it highlights the unique depth and breadth of educational, learning, and entertainment content readily available on the video sharing platform. From renowned Australian mathematics teacher Eddie Woo demystifying complex equations to Toby Hendy making science genuinely fun and accessible, YouTube provides an unparalleled, free library of high-quality content. Beyond exam preparation, this library allows Australian youth to explore diverse interests and discover new passions – whether delving into the wonders of science, learning to code, or mastering a new dive or a musical instrument. This demonstrates YouTube's role as an accessible extension of the classroom, available to every child.
Empowering Parental Guidance

With YouTube, parents are empowered to manage what their children watch and discover online. The report highlights that 74% of parents who use YouTube feel confident in their ability to guide their child on how to use YouTube (or YouTube Kids) responsibly. This demonstrates parents' active involvement and their comfort in navigating YouTube alongside their children, using YouTube's safety features and parental controls.
This perspective from parents complements the long-standing view of teachers, who have used YouTube to enhance their teaching and extend learning beyond the classroom. The synergy between parents and teachers both embracing YouTube for its educational potential, creates an unparalleled and enriching learning environment for young Australians.
At YouTube, we are deeply committed to continuing to invest in a safe, enriching, and accessible learning environment for young Australians. By working hand-in-hand with parents, educators, and the broader community, we aim to empower the next generation with the knowledge and digital literacy they need to thrive.
