Supporting Canada's Responsible Data Centre Development Principles: Google’s approach for responsible energy growth

Google is a signatory to the Canadian federal government’s Responsible Data Centre Development Principles.

Data centres are vital infrastructure for Canada. They support the health care, financial services, research and government systems Canadians rely on, while creating new economic opportunities for communities and businesses.

As the demand for compute grows, the Canadian federal government’s Responsible Data Centre Development Framework recognizes that data center growth must be pursued responsibly, with careful stewardship of water and other resources, and meaningful involvement of host communities.

Google’s support of the framework principles reflects our commitment to building data centres the right way and bringing benefits to local communities. We will pay our own way and protect ratepayers; help bring new energy online; contribute to grid resilience; create local, long-term jobs; and invest in efficiency and reliability. These principles are aligned with our longstanding commitments in this regard, including Google’s commitment to paying for 100% of the power our data centres use and any new infrastructure costs directly driven by our growth.
