Street View is coming to Oman!

In simple words, you can now explore the streets of Oman on Google Maps, from anywhere around the world. Oman is the 7th country in the Middle East and North Africa to be explored on Google Street View following Palestine, Jordan, Tunisia, UAE, Lebanon and Qatar.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), and the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority (NSGIA), we’re excited to announce the launch of phase one of Street View in Oman. So how does Street View actually work?

It’s an interactive feature of Google Maps that allows users to explore streets and destinations through immersive, 360-degree imagery. The first phase of the project includes a curated selection of Oman’s locations including Khor Rori, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Oman. From the vibrant capital city of Muscat to its pristine coastlines, rugged mountains, and cultural treasures, the Street View experience reveals a side of Oman that invites exploration and admiration. Capturing these locations was done using Street View Trekkers, mounted on pickup trucks, which made it easy to move on any type of road, covering a distance of around 36,000 km.

Empowering Communities and Enriching Experiences

Google Street View offers benefits beyond virtual exploration, serving as a vital tool for businesses, as it enhances the accuracy of Google Maps and the visibility of local businesses. Students and researchers can also benefit from Street View, as it can provide students with virtual field trips and immersive learning experiences.

This launch of Google Street View in Oman marks our first phase of the project. Stay tuned for phase 2 next year!
