Google released its annual Year in Search review today, recapping the most trending queries in 2022 and revealing insights into the region's zeitgeist and societal trends. Every day, people turn to Search to explore and find valuable and reliable information. They come looking for everything from news and helpful how-tos to sports and entertainment. Search plays an essential role in helping people access valuable information. More than two-thirds of people in MENA rely on Search to keep up with the news ( 74% in the UAE, 62% in Saudi Arabia, and 68% in Egypt)

Trends this year showed that 2022 in MENA was the year of adapting following a global pandemic that created uncertainty around the world. The annual lists reveal the most trending search queries which experienced a higher volume of search over a sustained period in 2022 compared to 2021. Here are some of the trending topics in the MENA region:

Egypt: US Dollar rates vs. the Egyptian Pound ranked first as Egypt has been weathering inflation and currency devaluation over the past few months. COP27 was also among the top trending queries this year as Egypt hosted the UN's climate summit (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh.

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia's e-learning platform Madrasti was the most trending search query across the kingdom. However, a love of sports was evident in Saudi Arabia with the Men's FIFA World Cup ™ match between Saudi Arabia vs Argentina.

UAE: Online game Wordle was among the top trending queries in the UAE. FIFA World Cup ™ and The Cricket World Cup also trended.
