Small businesses are the backbone of Africa’s economy, contributing nearly 50% of GDP and employing two-thirds of the workforce. Yet, many entrepreneurs struggle with scaling due to limited knowledge, resources, and funding. That’s why we launched Hustle Academy, an intensive bootcamp-style program designed to equip small business owners with the skills and tools needed to grow and succeed.
Since its launch, Hustle Academy has helped over 15,000 entrepreneurs across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa refine their business strategies. To build on this impact, we introduced Hustle Academy Brings You—a speaker series where Africa’s most inspiring entrepreneurs share their personal journeys, challenges, and hard-won lessons.
In our first episode of the new season, we feature Adenike Ogunlesi, founder of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, Nigeria’s leading children’s clothing brand. What started as a personal project—making clothes for her kids—grew into a multi-branch business with international reach. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing.
"I made a lot of mistakes early on," Adenike shares. "One of the hardest things was learning how to structure my business properly. I had to understand finance, supply chains, and branding—things I never thought about when I was just making clothes for my children."
She discusses the importance of funding, overcoming setbacks, and building a brand that stands the test of time. Her story is a powerful reminder that resilience and continuous learning are key to entrepreneurial success.
