Year in Search 2025: Here’s what Aussies searched this year
‘Tis the season for Year in Search – when we look back at the moments, people, and trends that captured Australia's curiosity in 2025.
This year, our searches show we were eager to understand the world, question the unknown and satisfy our cravings. We followed the federal election, global affairs and natural disasters – including Cyclone Alfred and the LA fires. We looked up Belle Gibson, Bianca Censori’s entrance at the Grammys, and we farewelled icons Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Hackman and Diane Keaton.
Amidst the headlines, we found moments of joy and intrigue. We rallied behind our athletes during the Women's Cricket World Cup and cheered on Australian Open winner Madison Keys. We dreamed of travelling to Dubai, and craved its viral chocolate. We fixed our cars and tackled home improvement projects. We loved Labubu, went crazy for KPop Demon Hunters – and were united in our need to know… "what does 6 7 mean?"
Australia’s Year in Search offers a fascinating snapshot of our nation's interests. It shows Aussies are resourceful, globally aware, passionate about sport, and endlessly inquisitive. Here are some of the themes and searches that piqued our interest and sparked our imagination this year:
Keeping up with a changing world
This year, our searches showed we were tuned in to the events shaping our world, both at home and abroad. We braced for natural disasters, turning to Search not just for the latest updates on "Cyclone Alfred" - the top trending query of the year - but for crucial advice, asking "how to prepare for a cyclone." We followed the election, went out to vote and searched for Peter Dutton and Sussan Ley. Beyond our borders, we followed the news about Charlie Kirk, and looked up Pope Francis, Pope Leo and Greta Thunberg. While it was a year of seismic change and upheaval, some trends remained constant. We kept searching for "DIY car maintenance, "St. Patrick's Day" and"how to talk to women" (which featured on the 2024 Year in Search lists).
On the field and on screen
Every year, our passion for sport shines in Search. Cricket was a clear highlight in 2025, with the "Women’s Cricket World Cup" and "India vs England" capturing our attention. On the tennis court, we cheered on Madison Keys, the top trending global public figure. We also followed pop culture stories, with Aussie personalities like Belle Gibson and Bianca Censori, along with Jimmy Kimmel and Kendrick Lamar, landing on the top trending list. We turned our attention to the big screen, enjoying all kinds of genres, from the fantasy flick How to Train Your Dragon, to the blockbuster video game adaptation Minecraft: The Movie, and we watched the coming-of-age drama Adolescence.
Classic comfort food and viral cravings
This year, our culinary searches were a mix of traditional and trending. We craved a classic "hot cross bun recipe," which topped the list of trending recipes, and looked forward to festive Easter treats. The viral "Dubai chocolate recipe" (with its pistachio-tahini filling) had us melting, and we whipped up delightfully fluffy cloud cakes. We also explored the curious combination of sweet and salty with searches for “bacon desserts,” and whizzed up Ninja slushies.
But it wasn't all indulgence. Diet-related trends surged this year, including "pink salt trick recipe" as a viral diet trick, and queries for "Japanese mounjaro" showing a growing interest in natural weight loss recipes.
Tinkering, crafting and creating
Our DIY searches show our creativity and resourcefulness - in the garage through to the craft table and in the digital world. A surge in searches related to inspecting and maintaining cars and "home improvement" showed we weren’t afraid to roll up our sleeves and tackle big, complex projects. We turned to Search to master the art of making Ddakji, the traditional Korean folded-paper game popularised by Squid Game, and to learn “how to make hair extensions” and “lava lamps”. We also experimented with AI tools to design custom action figures and bring stories to life.
The trends that made us say "wait, what?
And then there were the trends and memes that were surprising, quirky… and at times confusing. We were swept up in a collectible craze, with searches for Labubu figures surging this year. We wanted to expand our vocabulary, with a sudden need to know the definitions for niche terms such as "discog" and "claves." And who could forget the great numerical enigma of 2025, when the entire country seemed to be asking: "what does 6 7 mean?"
