Here’s what Canadians are searching for this Halloween

As Halloween creeps closer, Canadians are turning to Search to plot out their costumes, makeup looks, and home decor. Our annual Frightgeist search trends offer a peek into what’s capturing the public’s imagination for Halloween 2026.

Pop Culture & Digital Trends

This year’s costume searches are driven by a mix of blockbuster nostalgia, gaming lore, and evolving aesthetic tastes. Cinematic favourites remain strong, with “Hocus Pocus” the top trending movie searched alongside "costume" in September 2026, while the masked Quebec rock band “Angine de Poitrine” is the top trending musical act.

Meanwhile, digital surrealism has officially crossed from the screen into real life. Searches for "liminal space" hit an all-time high in Canada following the craze around the horror film Backrooms, and "liminal photography" became a breakout search. On the cozier side of the spectrum, search interest in "whimsy" peaked nationwide this year, making "whimsical Halloween decor" a breakout trend over the past month.

But when it comes to the overall top-searched costumes, Marvel, DC, and Disney characters remain timeless fan-favourites. Here are the top trending costumes across Canada right now.

Four-Legged Friends
Pet owners are also having fun this season. Across Canada, searches for "dog costume" nearly doubled those for "kid costume," with canine Halloween options like “Scooby-Doo”, “banana”, and “hot dog” leading the pack.

Looks & Lairs
Of course, Halloween extends far beyond the outfit. Canadians are decking out their front porches and transforming their looks with surprising detail. Gaming culture is making its mark on makeup trends this year, with Genshin Impact’s character “Furina” leading Canada's top-trending makeup searches, followed by classic staples like “vampire”, “devil”, and "skulls."

Whether you're crafting a liminal photography backdrop for your Halloween, styling a whimsical wreath for your front door, or fitting your dog with a hot dog suit, Search is always here to help bring your Halloween vision to life.
