Hype: a new way to help creators get discovered

The incredible diversity of creators is the heartbeat of YouTube. Passionate creators are building communities around every conceivable interest – from cooking and gaming to music and makeup. And every day, new creators breakthrough on YouTube across regions, languages and genres. But we've also heard that for smaller creators, even those with dedicated fanbases, reaching new viewers can be a hurdle.
To further support up-and-coming creators by helping them get discovered and connecting to new audiences, we’re launching Hype in India. Viewers can now go beyond like, share and subscribe and “hype” videos from creators with 500 to 500,000 subscribers.
Here’s how it works:
- Viewers will have the option to hype a video for the first 7 days after it is published.
- Viewers can hype videos free of charge up to 3 times a week.
- When a video is hyped, it receives points.
- The more points the video gets, the higher the video climbs on the leaderboard with the top 100 hyped videos, which appears under the Explore section.
Leaderboard discoverability
Once on the leaderboard, more points can help the video climb the ranks -- with the potential to be promoted in the YouTube home feed. Beyond the leaderboard, Hype is a way for viewers to let creators know what content they're vibing with most. Hyped videos may also receive badges showing the video is a favorite of viewers.
Smaller creators receive a bonus to level the playing field
When viewers hype, bonus points are automatically applied for emerging creators based on their amount of subscribers. The fewer the subscribers, the bigger the bonus, helping smaller creators get more visibility on their content. We want to make sure everyone has a fair shot at the spotlight.
In just the first four weeks of our beta tests for hype in Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil, users hyped over 5 million times across more than 50,000 unique channels.
