A Digital Future for Ireland: How Revenue is Partnering with Google Cloud
Ireland is a country known for its rich history, but when it comes to managing the nation’s tax and customs, the focus is firmly on the future. Every day, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners (Irish: Na Coimisinéirí Ioncaim or Revenue for short), the body responsible for tax and customs, undertakes the vital work of keeping the nation's economy running smoothly. To ensure they can continue to serve the public effectively in a fast-changing world, Revenue is embarking on a major project to modernise its technology.
That’s where we stepped in- Google Cloud has been chosen for a seven-year partnership to help build Revenue’s data platform of the future. This collaboration is about more than just technology, it’s about creating a smarter and unified data foundation to support thousands of Revenue employees in their service to the Irish people.
From Scattered Information to a Single Source of Truth
In the past, important information was stored across many different, separate systems.
Our collaboration will help bring all that information together into a single, secure place. Migrating from legacy on-premises systems to a state-of-the-art, unified AI-Lakehouse architecture on Google Cloud. By leveraging BigQuery, Google Cloud Storage, and BigLake, we are helping them break down data silos and establish a single source of truth for all data practitioners. This new, unified system means that Revenue’s teams can analyse data and find insights without having to constantly move or copy information. This not only saves time and money but also makes the whole system much more efficient.
To further accelerate time-to-insight and lower the technical skills barrier, the platform is enhanced by powerful AI capabilities, featuring Gemini as an embedded assistant within BigQuery Studio to provide intelligent code completion, translate natural language prompts into complex SQL queries and automatically generate visualisations for business analysts.
Data That is Secure, Sovereign, and Protected
We know that for a public body like Revenue, protecting the privacy of taxpayer’s data is of the utmost importance. Our solution has been designed with this as its top priority. All of Revenue’s data will be stored and handled exclusively within the European Union, ensuring strict compliance with local regulations. Revenue retains total control over its encrypted data, holding the exclusive keys to make information unreadable to anyone else—including Google—at any time. By migrating to Google Cloud, Revenue is running its data operations on a grid-supported, highly efficient infrastructure, actively reducing its carbon footprint and making significant progress toward its environmental goals.
A True Partnership for Progress
This journey is about building long-term capability as much as it is about technology. Through structured training programs, technical guidance, and ongoing support resources, Google Cloud is helping equip Revenue’s teams with the expertise needed to maximize their new cloud infrastructure from day one.
We are proud to be part of Ireland's digital story and are committed to helping Revenue build a tax and customs platform to serve the country.
