Building the Future of Learning: Our New Commitments to India’s Education Ecosystem
The journey of learning in India has always been a shared one - a partnership between students, teachers, and the education system that supports them. Building on our vision of serving as a thoughtful, responsible companion for every learner, we're deepening our commitment to every part of that partnership with new investments and collaborations designed to empower students, teachers, and institutions across the country.
Scaling access to quality learning
Google.org is supporting Wadhwani AI with a ₹85 crore (nearly $10 million) grant for the AI for Education Collaborative. This initiative aims to drive the AI-led transformation of government-owned education platforms like SWAYAM, POSHAN Tracker, state learning management systems, and national skilling portals. The direct integration of AI into these public systems will transform existing digital tools into adaptive, future-ready resources that provide personalized learning pathways and reduce administrative burdens for educators.
The project will deliver tangible support at every stage of the journey - from using voice-AI to help young students build oral reading fluency in ten Indian languages, to deploying AI-powered English language coaches designed to make students job-ready. The initiative has already reached around 10 million students and educators, with the goal of empowering 75 million students, 1.8 million educators and 1 million early career professionals from early childhood to higher education by the end of 2027.
Empowering teachers with AI skills
Teachers are at the heart of the learning journey. For years, our Google for Education teams have worked with institutions across India to provide critical digital training, helping over a million teachers build new skills. Now, through resources like the Gemini Academy, we’re continuing that work with a focus on the practical and responsible use of AI.
Building on this commitment, we will be collaborating with government agencies on a new nationwide initiative to train educators and support staff. The goal is to provide teachers with AI tools for administrative tasks and lesson design, so they can dedicate more time to what is most important: mentoring and connecting with their students. This collaboration will help advance the NEP 2020 vision of a technology-driven, inclusive education system.
National framework for AI in higher education
We are collaborating with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, (CCSU) to help build India’s first AI-enabled state university. This collaboration will contribute towards a national framework for modernizing India’s vocational and higher education ecosystem.
Using Google Cloud and Gemini, CCSU aims to transform its teaching methods and operations. For students, this means access to personalized AI tutors and skill gap analysis to help them align their learning with workforce needs. For educators, AI will help design teaching content and multilingual aids. And for administrators, intelligent automation will help streamline workflows.
The insights from this pilot are intended to help MSDE develop a national best practice framework to guide colleges and universities across India. The goal is to ensure students in regional institutions have the same access to world-class tools and mentorship as those in urban centers.
Each of these partnerships reflects our deep commitment to India's learning journey. By supporting students, empowering teachers, and helping institutions modernize, we believe that together, we can help build a future where every learner has the opportunity to thrive.
