Flex by Google Pay: Reimagining Everyday Credit for India
At Google Pay, over the years, we've aimed to make credit simple and accessible for everyone, with education and choice as key levers behind our offerings. This has ranged from integrating AI-powered support guides to broadening the range of credit options available through trusted financial institutions.
Most recently, we deepened this commitment by onboarding IDFC First Bank, L&T Finance, PayU Finance, and SMFG India Credit as our latest partners. This collaborative approach has successfully expanded credit access to over 15,000 PIN codes, with a vast majority of loans empowering users in Tier 2+ cities. Now, we are excited to focus on another key opportunity: everyday credit.
Democratizing credit requires more than just access: it requires strengthening the complete credit ecosystem. This means addressing both the long-term needs that personal loans solve for, and the everyday, transactional credit that helps people manage daily expenses with the right balance of flexibility and control. Credit cards can be a powerful tool for financial flexibility. But even today, transactional credit in India remains underpenetrated with only about 50 million credit card holders in the country. We see a unique opportunity to reimagine this experience for the next generation of card users.
Introducing Flex by Google Pay
Today, we are thrilled to announce Flex by Google Pay, a UPI-powered, digital, co-branded credit card built to simplify the entire credit card experience for India’s financial needs. Flex makes the credit card experience as intuitive and ubiquitous as the UPI payments people make every day, all backed by the trusted, secure experience of the Google Pay app.
This launch continues our long-standing approach of partnering deeply with India's financial ecosystem to build helpful and scalable solutions. Built on the RuPay network, we are excited to launch this first in partnership with Axis Bank, introducing the Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card. We look forward to expanding Flex to more issuer partners very soon.
Flex offers a simplified experience that enables users to pay with the card everywhere with instant reward redemption and flexible repayment options. Key features include:
- Simple Digital Application: Apply for Flex directly within the Google Pay app in just a few minutes. There is no physical paperwork. The card lives entirely on your phone giving you access to it anytime you need it.
- Pay anywhere, everywhere: Powered by the RuPay network, it gives you the freedom to scan and pay at millions of offline merchants or checkout on your favorite apps, for small or big payments.
- Instant Rewards: Earn ‘stars’ that are instantly redeemable on any Flex transaction, with a value of 1 Star = ₹1. You don’t have to wait until the month’s end to use your rewards.
- Flexible Repayment controls: Track your spends and manage bills directly in the Google Pay app, with the choice to pay in full or convert your credit card bill into EMIs.
- In-App Control: Manage security on your terms. Use the Google Pay app to set transaction limits, block/unblock the card, or reset your PIN instantly.
Available exclusively on Google Pay, users will be able to apply for the Flex card at zero cost from anywhere and start transacting within minutes. We are starting to roll this out today and look forward to bringing this to all users in the coming months. Interested users can join the waitlist directly within the Google Pay app.
We are incredibly excited about the potential here to transform how users engage with credit and empower millions to confidently manage their daily finances.
