Google Maps in India: Supercharged with Gemini
Google Maps is getting a powerful boost with Gemini that makes navigating and exploring smarter and easier. For years, we’ve used technology to push the limits of what a map can be. Over the years, India has embraced many of our AI features like Lens in Maps and Review Summaries. Today, we're pushing this vision a step further, utilizing Gemini to deliver a truly conversational, AI-enhanced experience while you explore and navigate the world.
From discovery to navigation, we’re pairing the power of Gemini with our trusted, real-world information to make your journeys smarter and more intuitive than ever. These new features are enabled by Gemini’s powerful reasoning and summarization capabilities —grounded in our trusted data about 35 million places in India, 250 million places around the world, and insights from the Maps community.
Getting things done while navigating just got simpler and easier with Gemini
We’re introducing the first hands-free, conversational driving experience in Google Maps, built with Gemini, alongside our comprehensive information about the real world. It's like having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat who can confidently help you get where you’re going, while you stay focussed on the road.
You can find places along your route, like “the nearest petrol pump,” get quick answers about your destination, like "What's parking like there?", handle multi-step requests, like asking to find a restaurant, followed by, “OK, let’s go there.” You can also connect to your other apps by asking, “...can you also add a calendar event for this meeting tomorrow for 5pm?” With your permission, Gemini connects with your Gmail and Calendar and adds the place automatically.
Know before you go with proactive, local tips by Gemini
Gemini will proactively analyze and summarize Maps reviews and web content to give you the most helpful, pointed and practical tips about a place while you check it out on Maps —before you even head there. For instance, if you're planning to visit Delhi’s Dilli Haat, Maps will now succinctly give you insider tips like “It's okay to bargain for prices” and “the momos in the Nagaland Stall are highly rated” or remind you to not miss the famous musical clock at 12 pm while visiting the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad.
Ask Maps questions about a place to get relevant answers
Despite the comprehensive tips, you may still have some questions. You can now ask Google Maps, and Gemini will provide a specific, relevant answer in a snap, acting as your reasoning engine, sifting through all the rich information in Maps—reviews, photos, and place details, and the web. Building on our previous example, you can look at Delhi’s Dilli Haat and also ask, “does it have parking?” or “what are some must-visit stalls?”
With this feature, you can start asking questions about a place today as part of your daily explorations. In the coming weeks, you’ll also be able to use Gemini in Navigation and get proactive local tips summarized by Gemini. We’re excited for you to try these new experiences on Android and iOS.
