Shopping is not always simple. Will this top look good on me? Is this my colour? Am I in the mood to try on jeans? Maybe these questions can be answered without leaving your living room!

Search can help you shop confidently and find exactly what you are looking for. Google's Shopping Graph is the world’s most comprehensive catalog of products, containing over 60 billion product listings, and our new AI-powered virtual try-on tool in Google Shopping brings the fitting room experience directly to your smartphone. By instantly showing how an item drapes, folds, and stretches across a diverse range of body types, you can confidently "try before you buy” and minimise return shipping waste. Just upload a single photo to see how that new polka dot dress or those cool capri pants could look on you!

The feature launches at a time when, according to the data, New Zealanders are looking to shop consciously, with ‘what is sustainable fashion’ a breakout search over the past 12 months. We’re also showing interest in “slow fashion” up 20% and the definition of “fast fashion” rising by 60%.

To dig a little deeper into what trends we might soon see on the high street, we took a look at what fashion we’re searching for in Aotearoa.

Shopping for Local Designers

There’s a signal to local shopping and an inclination for homegrown designers in our top trending searches, with “NZ fashion brands” up 60% in the past year, “NZ natural clothing” up 190% in past month and “Māori streetwear brands” a top search related to mens fashion. Top searched local designers in the past year include RUBY, Marle, Stolen Girlfriends Club and Maggie Marilyn. While rising fashion stars include Lela Jacobs up 90%, Porter James Sport up 30% and Rory William Docherty up 20%.

Shopping for Nostalgia

New Zealand’s trending searches highlight a deep interest in vintage and retro aesthetics. Spanning multiple eras and influencing specific subculture styles, the trending eras include:

  • 2000s: Clothing includes capri pants, babydoll tops, off shoulder tops, cowl neck top
  • 1990s: NZ among top three countries in world searching for 90s fashion
  • 1980s: Search interest in "late 80s streetwear fashion" is up 30% in NZ in the past year

Nostalgic subcultures breaking through include "punk kidcore" up 210%, "emo clothing nz" up 120%, and "2000s outfits" up 90% over the past month. Men’s fashion trends also heavily feature retro elements, including “70s clothing", "1920s mens fashion", "70s vest", "2000 mens sunglasses", and the "newsboy hat".

Shopping for Style

Some classic trends stand the test of time, with search interest in sequins and polka dots reaching an all-time high in New Zealand this year. However others are more surprising in their niche appeal, with top searched fashion styles in NZ in the past year including “harajuku fashion”, “victorian era fashion” and “naked fashion”. Our searches for styling advice span items like balloon skirts, palazzo pants and metal t-shirts, proving that fashion trends don’t always dictate personal style.

No matter what your personal style, Google can help you find what you’re looking for.
