Empowering the Next Generation of African Storytellers with Generative AI

Storytelling is Africa’s superpower. We see it in the vibrant Nollywood films that captivate global audiences and in the dynamic content from creators across the continent on YouTube. This creative economy in Sub-Saharan Africa is a high-growth powerhouse, projected to grow from $5 billion today to nearly $30 billion by 2032. Now, a new wave of technology is poised to accelerate that growth and help storytellers scale their work and imagination: Artificial Intelligence.

To help connect Africa's creative ecosystem with this global shift, we recently welcomed a cohort of 20 top African filmmakers and YouTube creators to our Google office in Nigeria. The goal was to push the boundaries of creative possibility with a deep-dive workshop on how AI can augment imagination and scale production. We collaborated with innovative filmmaker Malik Afegbua to ensure the curriculum was finely tailored to the specific needs of creators in the region.

Through this program, participants gained:

• Unlimited Access to Flow: To bridge the gap between learning and real-world production, we provided the cohort with three months of unlimited access to Flow alongside a subscription to the Google One AI Premium plan. Built on Google’s most advanced video-generation model (Veo 3.1), Flow slots directly into creators’ production pipelines, helping turn ambitious concepts into cinematic reality faster than ever before.
• Hands-on Sessions: Creators dove deep with an expert trainer in a practical, hands-on workshop, mastering the capabilities of tools like Flow and Gemini.
• Community Support: Post-workshop, participants gained access to a Discord group of global Flow power users and top AI filmmakers, providing a dedicated space for ongoing mentorship, technical support, and expert guidance.

The workshop highlighted several powerful and practical ways to use AI for filmmaking. Here are five pro-tips shared during the session that any creator can use to get started:

1. Accelerate your scripting and build a "Cultural Blueprint"

Think of Gemini as your "Script Supervisor." Use it to map out story arcs or generate first drafts that follow a cinematic rhythm. You can avoid generic AI content by using Gemini’s deep research feature to find hyper-specific details—like Nigerian social etiquette in the 1960s or the intricate weave of a traditional Aso-Oke. Feeding these cultural markers into generation tools ensures stronger authenticity. Then, upload your research materials to NotebookLM to summarize key information, extract insights, and verify facts.

2. Take ownership of creative direction with Flow

AI video generation works best when given clear direction. Tools like Flow turn concepts into high-quality video content with incredible efficiency. To truly control your narrative, create a "Keyframe A" (your starting point) and "Key Frame B" (your endpoint) to guide a character’s specific performance arc, giving you creative control over the final scene.

3. Anchor Your Story with Character Consistency

Leverage Nano Banana Pro's Character Consistency feature to seamlessly maintain your protagonist's appearance throughout an entire narrative. Generate a "hero" image of your lead character in a neutral studio setting. Apply this reference for every subsequent scene in Flow, ensuring your star looks identical whether on a red carpet or in a village square.

4. The "Human-Led" Edit

Remember that AI is the addition, not the substitution. Use Nano Banana’s Local Edits (“doodling” or “draw to edit”) to manually fix small details like a misplaced hand. Refine the image until it perfectly matches your human artistic vision.

5. Go global with automated dubbing

Language shouldn't be a barrier to reaching a wider audience. Tools like YouTube's automatic dubbing can translate your audio tracks, unlocking new geographies. Translate your video titles and descriptions so viewers searching in other languages can easily find your content.
