Measuring the impact of learning with AI in Sierra Leone and beyond
[]

As AI tools enter the classroom, educators want to know: will this help students learn, or just give them the answers? To help build a global evidence base for AI's impact on education, we partnered with Fab AIand the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education to test Guided Learning in Gemini.

Over eight weeks, we evaluated the math progress of over 1,700 junior secondary students. The results show AI can be a powerful pedagogical partner. Students using Guided Learning saw gains equivalent to 1.2 to 1.7 years of typical learning progress. Crucially, students used the tool to build conceptual understanding in over 90% of conversations, rather than just seeking direct answers.

To help others implement similar programs and run scalable studies, we are releasing our technical report, a teacher training guide, and a research playbook today.
