Mapping the Code of Life: How AlphaGenome Atlas is Helping Australian Researchers

Think of human DNA as a 3-billion-letter instruction manual that tells our bodies how to function. If just one letter is out of place – like a tiny typo – it could cause a rare illness or trigger cancer. Figuring out which of these ‘typos’ are harmless and which cause serious illness has taken years of trial and error.

This week, Google DeepMind launched AlphaGenome Atlas – a free, open platform powered by AI that maps and predicts the effects of all 9 billion single-letter DNA changes across the entire human genome. It is the most comprehensive catalogue of how genetic mutations affect human biology, and Australian researchers are already putting it to work.

Australia is home to some of the world’s leading medical researchers. Through our Digital Future Initiative, we are already working with local partners to turn this massive 1-petabyte dataset – that’s roughly 2,000 years of listening to music without ever repeating a song – into accessible, actionable insights. AlphaGenome Atlas gives researchers an unprecedented lens into human biology, helping solve biological mysteries and paving the way for personalised medicine. We expect to see some of the biggest impact in rare disease and cancer research.

Ensuring AI Healthcare Benefits Every Community

Since 2023 we have been working with the Centre for Population Genomics (CPG) - a joint initiative of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute – to explore how new AI technologies can support groundbreaking work in genomic medicine and ensure these scientific advances benefit every Australian.

Google is a proud supporter of CPG’s ourDNA program – an effort to collect genomic data from multiple under-represented communities and build a resource that supports better prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of genetic disease within these communities. CPG has been a long-time collaborator with the Genomics team in Google Research, leveraging tools like DeepPolisher which helps construct better reference genomes, DeepConsensus which makes sequencer output more accurate, and new methods to use reference genome from many ancestries to better analyse an individual.

CPG has also been using AlphaGenome to help their researchers accelerate the discovery of genetic factors associated with rare disease and have been among the first institutions in the world to test the AlphaGenome Atlas.

“For many families living with a rare genetic condition, even a complete genome sequence isn't enough to find the genetic change that's caused their child's disease. In many cases that's because that change sits outside protein-coding genes, in DNA regions where functional effects are much harder to predict. The AlphaGenome Atlas gives us faster and more accurate ways to investigate these variants, which we think has real potential to help families get answers sooner," said Professor Daniel MacArthur, Director of the Centre for Population Genomics.

Implications Beyond Healthcare

We are also collaborating with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO to explore broader scientific horizons. Through Science Digital, CSIRO is creating a secure AI platform that helps researchers safely integrate smart tools and automation into daily scientific workflows. The Science Digital team is exploring the use of AlphaGenome for several use cases and doing early analysis on its application beyond human health.

An Open Toolkit for Australian Science

Available for academic research through an intuitive and free-to-use website portal, AlphaGenome has potential application in a wide range of biomedical fields – from helping identify the genetic causes of rare diseases and the regulatory drivers in cancer to unravelling complex polygenic traits. Leading Australian research organisations have already been exploring some of these frontiers with AlphaGenome, and their efforts will be aided by the launch of the AlphaGenome Atlas.

AlphaGenome Atlas is another milestone in Google’s mission to harness AI for scientific discovery.
