Powering India’s Next Generation with the Science of Learning
A recent survey with Ipsos revealed something remarkable: for the first time; the top motivation for using AI globally is learning. This is especially true in India, where the country now leads the world in daily Gemini usage for learning.
There is immense optimism for what AI can do, with 74% of Indians believing it will improve student outcomes. With that opportunity comes a deep, collective responsibility: to ensure AI serves as a thoughtful, responsible companion for every learner and teacher in India.
Today, we are announcing a suite of new partnerships, investments, and product updates to help do just that. (You can read more in our deep-dive posts on our ecosystem initiatives and product updates.)
Driving scaled impact through ecosystem partnerships
- An ₹85 crore (nearly $10M) Google.org grant to Wadhwani AI to scale adaptive learning for 75 million students, 1.8 million educators and 1 million early career professionals from early childhood to higher education by December 2027.
- Deepening our support for teachers, through a new nationwide initiative to train educators and support staff.
- Collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, to build India’s first AI-enabled state university and develop a national framework for modernising India’s vocational ecosystem, leveraging advanced Cloud and AI technologies.
New AI tools for students and educators
- Full-length JEE Main practice tests in Gemini (also coming soon in AI Mode in Search), grounded in rigorously vetted content from PhysicsWallah and Careers360.
- New features in AI Mode in Search to help students build comprehensive study guides and interactive quizzes with the Canvas tool, a dynamic side panel that helps create and refine documents, plans and more.
- Tools to help educators drive more engaging and personalised learning, including the Google classroom app in Gemini, native audio and video feedback and AI-usage insights in Google Classroom, and Google Workspace Studio to help educators automate workflows with AI agents.
- Tools to help the education community verify if content was created or edited using Google AI.
Combining the art of teaching with the science of learning
Our approach is guided by a simple philosophy: combining the human connection of teaching with the science of learning aka how people learn. Built in partnership with researchers, policymakers, educators, and parents, our AI models are designed to be catalysts for curiosity, not just engines for answers. A prime example is Guided Learning in the Gemini app, which functions as a personal tutor to help students uncover logic for themselves.
Proof from the classroom
We apply a rigorous scientific approach to understand AI’s real-world impact. In a recent randomised control study, conducted with City Montessori School in Lucknow and Fab AI, Google DeepMind worked with teachers to integrate Guided Learning into math classes for Grade 8-9 students. Early analysis shows that in nearly three of every four conversations, students sought to develop their understanding rather than just pushing for immediate answers. When AI is designed for learning from the ground up, and intentionally and responsibly integrated into the curriculum to work alongside teachers, it can encourage deep comprehension and critical thinking.
Making our tools accessible
India is home to one of our largest global communities of AI-powered learners. It leads the world in daily Gemini usage for learning, embracing features like Guided Learning, quizzes, flashcards, and study guides to master diverse topics, from advanced physics to STEM. India is also one of our largest student communities for NotebookLM. Just in the past month, Indian users have already generated over 3 million outputs, like quizzes, flashcards, audio overviews and video overviews using NotebookLM. Teachers across the country are using Google Classroom to reclaim their time by building lesson plans and creating risk assessments for school trips.
To bring these features to everyone, our products including Gemini, NotebookLM, AI Mode in Search and Google Classroom are available in multiple Indian languages.
We are energized by the opportunity to scale this impact and look forward to our continued collaboration with India’s education ecosystem to help everyone reach their full potential.
