On the occasion of Women’s History Month, the Barjeel Art Foundation, an independent, United Arab Emirates-based initiative established to manage, preserve and exhibit the personal art collection of Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi has curated a special digital exhibition on Google Arts & Culture. The newly launched ‘Pocket Gallery’, a new digital experience taking users through virtual 3D gallery spaces, offers art enthusiasts an opportunity to explore the evolution of abstract art through the lens of remarkable women artists, all in one place.

Discover 47 artworks, from pioneers like Effat Naghi from Egypt, to contemporary innovators like Najat Makki from the United Arab Emirates, revealing the profound impact of women in 20th-century abstract art. Many of these artworks have been captured in super high resolution with Art Camera technology, allowing visitors to get closer to the finest details.

Menhat Helmy's "Space Exploration / Cosmos," a geometric blue painting, marks the gallery entrance. Her work blends space themes with Islamic art.

To your left, you’ll spot “Blue Algae” by Moroccan artist Malika Agueznay. Painted in 1968, this mesmerizing composition, inspired by underwater life, marked the beginning of her iconic algae motif.

Huguette Caland’s “City II” is an abstract landscape with feminist undertones. Captured by Art Camera, users can zoom in to see its details.

Najat Makki's "Window” features bold abstractions inspired by nature and Emirati culture, influenced by Egyptian artists.

Google Arts & Culture had previously collaborated with the Barjeel Art Foundation, by featuring over 400 artworks. Explore more artworks by Arab female artists through high resolution details on Google Arts & Culture website or via the app, available on both Android and iOS devices.
