Gemini 2024: Australians Embrace AI for Productivity and Creativity
A little over a year ago, we introduced Gemini 1.0 to the world — and Australians have truly embraced it. But how are Aussies using this technology? Today, we’re taking a look! From enhancing productivity and expanding our knowledge, to exploring creative avenues and social connection, in 2024, we used Gemini in diverse and innovative ways.1
Getting Things Done
It's no surprise that we are a practical bunch. Seven out of the top 10 uses for Gemini revolve around getting things done – think of it as our national "can-do" attitude, powered by AI! We're using Gemini to:
- Become Information Masters: The top category queries in Gemini this year were to ‘Get Information’. Australians were seeking to understand something new, find a fact and get the right answer about something specific, or get expert advice to gain knowledge. This could include prompts like, “What are the potential costs to move cross-country, from Sydney to Perth?”, or “Where would advanced surfers recommend a beginner surf in January in Brisbane?”
- Ace Our Studies: Gemini is the ultimate study buddy! Locals went looking for ‘Academic Help’ with a homework answer or for inspiration to kick-start an essay, asking questions like “I need to explain why Joan Lindsay's Picnic at Hanging Rock was an important work during its time for my English class – how can I structure my thoughts?” Gemini also makes it easier to engage in continuous learning, as it understands the context of the previous conversation, so you can continue to ask questions and "dig deeper" into the search topic and get even more answers.
- Navigate the Digital World: People turned to Gemini to ‘Explore Content’ and ‘Work Smarter’ by summarising articles and crafting professional emails – think prompts along the lines of, “Help me write an email asking for time off to go to my friend's wedding.” Gemini streamlines our tasks, freeing up time for the things that matter most.
Creativity and Connection
But there's more to the Aussie AI story than just productivity. We're also tapping into Gemini's creative and social potential to inspire new ideas and express ourselves:
- Strike Up a Chat: Whether we're pondering life's big questions or just battling boredom, Aussies aren't shy to ‘Make Conversation’ with Gemini, revealing a desire for connection and a playful curiosity about AI. This could include wondering things like, “How do you celebrate summer?” or “Do you believe in ghosts?” or perhaps asking for tips and “What are the types of things you can do?"
Unleash Our Inner Artists: This year, we upgraded our creative image generation capabilities in the Gemini app with Imagen 3. In just a few words - like ”Generate an image of two flowers growing on Mars, using a surrealist art style.” – people can ‘Create Media Art’ and generate an image in a variety of styles.

- Sharpen Our Thinking: Need a sounding board to ‘Develop Ideas’? Gemini's there to help us clarify our thoughts and refine our strategies. This is perfect for people who want to share unfiltered thoughts and get thoughtful questions and clarifications that will help make thinking more crisp and concrete. An example prompt could be, “Can I ramble on about my expansion strategy for a minute and you tell me what clear points you heard?”
