Enabling Gemini for Education across all Malaysian public universities
Today marks a significant milestone for education in Malaysia: All 20 public universities have officially enabled Gemini for Education within their academic and administrative frameworks, reaching nearly 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members. As part of their existing Google Workspace for Education environment, these universities now have access to Gemini for Education, providing the entire academic community with secure, AI-powered assistance for research and learning. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has further equipped 40,000 faculty members with Google AI Pro for Education for expanded access to our premium AI models, alongside providing NotebookLM Enterprise to 128,000 students to supercharge their research and writing. This initiative supports Malaysia’s goal to become an AI-driven nation by 2030.
Through these initiatives, students and lecturers in public universities in Malaysia now have access to Gemini 3.1 Pro — our most advanced reasoning model — infused with LearnLM — our family of pedagogical models fine-tuned for learning. They can explore features like Guided Learning, which acts as a collaborative thinking partner to help students build a deep understanding of concepts instead of just getting quick answers, and Deep Research, their personal research assistant.
Beyond access to technology, we are providing robust training to help students and faculty develop AI literacy. Initiatives like Gemilang, Google Skills platform, free Google AI courses, Gemini Certification for University Students, and Google Career Launchpad are designed to help users boost efficiency, personalize learning, and prepare for the workforce.
Here are some examples of how key Malaysian institutions are using Google AI tools.
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP): Personalizing education with Gems
UniMAP is personalizing learning for students through Gems, personalized versions of Gemini you can build and customize to be experts on any topic without any coding. A pioneer lecturer at the university built a bespoke Gem that serves as a specialized, on-demand study partner for his Integrated Circuits Design and MEMS Design and Fabrication students in the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technology. The Gem guides them through their specific curriculum, creating a more interactive and personal learning experience.
Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM): Deep Research and digital etiquette
In the Introduction to New Media Communications course at USIM, students use Gemini’s Deep Research capabilities and NotebookLM to analyze social media content and study digital etiquette. They also use NotebookLM for self-directed learning by uploading lecture notes to instantly generate study guides, summaries, and sample quiz questions to prepare for exams.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM): Research-backed success with NotebookLM
Research conducted at UPM shows that AI tools like NotebookLM are bridging literacy gaps and building student confidence. Undergraduates use it to enhance literature reviews and even generate podcasts from study materials, which has boosted positive attitudes toward technology and reduced resistance to academic research. This approach has strengthened UPM’s leadership in flexible learning while ensuring students remain competitive and efficient in a global landscape.
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS): Leading with community
UNIMAS is training more than 500 lecturers in Google Workspace for Education and certifying 120 as Gemini Certified Educators. This progress extends to students, too, with nearly 500 earning certifications. By pairing powerful, secure AI tools with comprehensive training, we're working alongside the MOHE to help equip students and educators with the skills they need for the future. This collaboration is a key part of supporting Malaysia's vision, and we look forward to seeing what this new generation of thinkers, creators and leaders will build.
