New safety software for the Nest Thermostat

It’s interesting what happens when you start out as a thermostat company, then start making smoke alarms and Wi-Fi cameras. You start thinking beyond energy, beyond comfort – you begin to focus on safety.

So for the last few months, we’ve been working on ways the Nest Learning Thermostat can keep your family safe and protect your home. And now every first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostat across the world has automatically received new 4.5 safety software. Here’s what you’ll see:

Safety Temperature Alerts
Every Nest Thermostat has a Safety Temperature. You tell it what temperature your house should never reach – like when your pipes could freeze – and Nest will turn on the heat if it's getting too cold. It works even when you’ve turned the thermostat off. But what if it’s so cold your heating system can’t keep up? What if your AC breaks down in a heat wave? Now Nest can send you an alert on your phone if the temperature gets dangerously low or high so you can take care of the problem. And once everything’s OK, you’ll get an update so you can stop worrying.

Nest Protect Emergency Alerts
If you have a Nest Protect at home, you can now see smoke and carbon monoxide alerts right on your thermostat. The more places you see an alarm, the higher your chances are of catching the problem or escaping quickly.

Nest Protect Emergency Shutoff
The Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect have always worked together to help keep you safe from carbon monoxide. Because furnaces are one of the top sources of deadly CO leaks, a CO alarm on Nest Protect will prompt your thermostat to turn off the heat. Now your Nest Protect and Nest Thermostat can do the same thing for fire. Smoke often spreads through the ventilation system in a fire, and air from a vent can stoke a flame. So if Nest Protect senses smoke, the Nest Thermostat will turn off your forced air heating or cooling system as a precaution. Learn more >

Better control for multi-zone homes
You can now control up to 40 thermostats from one Nest Account – 20 per home. They’ll work together to help save energy and coordinate features like Auto-Away across all thermostats at once.
