University System of Maryland and Google team up to train Marylanders

Whether you are entering the workforce for the first time or looking to switch fields, getting up-to-date job skills is really important. That's why we’re thrilled to team up with the University System of Maryland (USM) to help more Marylanders get the job-ready skills they need to succeed. Through this new partnership, we're bringing Google Career Certificates and AI training to all 12 USM campuses, creating more accessible and flexible pathways to growing career fields.
From the University of Maryland, College Park to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, USM’s reach allows us to support learners from a wide range of communities. Now, students across the state can build practical skills for today's most in-demand jobs.
Our collaboration offers:
- Job-ready training: With Google Career Certificates, students can prepare for careers in cybersecurity, data analytics, project management, and more in under six months, with no prior experience needed.
- Foundational AI skills: The AI Essentials course will help learners apply artificial intelligence in practical ways, while learning about responsible AI practices.
- Accelerating AI in education: Google.org is providing funding for USM’s new AI in Education Center, which will research how AI can improve learning for all students.
- Credit for your work: To help students get a head start on their degrees, several USM campuses will offer academic credit for completing Google Career Certificates. For example, the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) offers up to 10 credits, helping students save time and money as they work toward their degree and their next job.
- AI Tools: Institutions across the system will have the opportunity to access Google’s latest AI tools, like the University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland, Baltimore County which already provide access to Gemini to students and faculty.
Expanding support for students who have served
This partnership also creates new opportunities for Maryland’s large military community. USM institutions serve thousands of military learners each year, with six campuses ranked among the Best for Vets colleges and UMGC — which serves over 60,000 military-connected learners — ranking #1 for primarily online universities. This initiative provides flexible, skills-based training to help translate their valuable service experience into credentials for their next chapter.
To deepen our support for student veterans nationwide, Google.org is also supporting Student Veterans of America (SVA) with $4 million. This funding will help veterans across the country, including in Maryland, get access to Google Career Certificates and AI training. It will also support SVA’s critical work to improve the ways universities serve student veterans and provide direct career programming for more than 15,000 transitioning service members.
Connecting skills to opportunity
Our goal is to help people not just learn new skills, but land great jobs. Graduates of the Google Career Certificate program get access to job search resources including an employer consortium of more than 150 companies—including Booz Allen Hamilton, Siemens, and Google—that are looking for skilled talent.
Globally, more than one million people have completed a Google Career Certificate, and over 70% report a positive career outcome like a new job, raise, or promotion within six months.
We’re honored to work with the University System of Maryland and Student Veterans of America to help more people build the futures they want, right in their own communities.
