An illustrated hand points to a smartphone screen displaying a map with a planned route marked in red. Options to add a stop, search along the route, or see highlights along the route are available.

Road trip enthusiasts, you’re going to want to try this one out: Explore along your route is a new Google Maps feature that shows you suggestions for interesting local stops along your way to help you save time when planning your drives. So if you’re checking out your journey from point A to point B (and maybe C, D and E) and you want to find a good place for lunch or a scenic view where you can stretch your legs, try this tool. It’ll find hidden gems and local favorites for you without you having to go dig for them on your own.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Open the Google Maps mobile app and enter your destination.
  2. Once you’ve hit “Directions,” tap “Add stops.” Then you can explore the pins on the map that show top-rated restaurants and points of interest along your route. You can click these to learn more about the locations and add them to your drive.
  3. You can also scroll to the bottom of the screen and swipe up to find these local suggestions organized by topic, so you can swipe through restaurants, points of interest and fast food.
A smartphone displays a GPS app with a route through a city, showing landmarks like the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge. Options for finding restaurants, gas, coffee, and groceries are available, with "Top Restaurants" showing estimated detour times.

4. Tap to select a location, either from the gallery at the bottom of your screen or on the map, and read more about it in the overview listed. You’ll see an option to add it to your trip — and away you go!
