Editor’s note: To mark the second phase of our long-term collaboration between Google Arts & Culture and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, we invited their Director Hala Badri to give us a snapshot of the new edition of the stories about Dubai’s culture and heritage.

I always describe Dubai as a place where exploration never truly ends. There's always a hidden alley, a unique perspective, or an untold story waiting to be discovered. That's why I’m thrilled to announce the second chapter of our partnership with Google Arts & Culture: ‘Discover Dubai’.

This exciting collaboration makes the emirate’s cultural heart and heritage accessible to anyone. With over 70 new, expertly-curated stories — featuring 400+ photos, 40+ videos and audio interviews — this time, we’re giving the world a closer look at Dubai’s artists, gastronomers, innovators and community pioneers.

Diverse communities in every corner

The first edition of our collaboration delved into Dubai’s rich history, where we told stories of our traditional communities like the pearl merchants and boat builders. The latest edition taps into Dubai’s diverse sub-communities, such as the thriving skateboarding and surfing scene.

We pride ourselves on being a city that not only welcomes people of all different backgrounds, but also nurtures their creative growth;and what better way to get to know the city’s multicultural heart and soul than by reading and hearing its stories first-hand.

Infusing art and design with authenticity

Join street photographer Jalal Abuthina for a unique walking tour around Deira, or embark on an overnight desert adventure with astrophotographer Samy Olabi. You’ll discover a different side to Dubai — one with an array tapestry of experiences that extends far beyond your expectations.

For the trained eye, there are also subtle clues to the inspiration behind Dubai’s designs. Discover Al Salam mosque, which fuses architectural elements inspired by the city’s diverse residents. Public art installations such as Aya by Mattar Bin Lahej celebrate the rich heritage of the Arabic language.

Sustainability: A thread woven through the present

Looking towards the future, sustainability takes center stage in Dubai's creative landscape. From upcycled art to green food initiatives, the city's creators are harnessing the power of nature to fuel their creativity in an environmentally responsible way.

BioSand, an alternative material to concrete made from Dubai's desert sand, is just one of the testaments to the ingenuity of its innovators, who are not only inspired by their environment but also committed to sustainable solutions that benefit the world.
