Beyond the Research Scholar program: how we're supporting early-career academics
Over the past five years, the Research Scholar program has fostered groundbreaking research while empowering the next generation of academic leaders. With investments of nearly $23 million, the program has supported 400 research projects and 430 early-career researchers across 75 countries. Our mission has always been crystal clear: to bridge the funding gap for early-career faculty and cultivate a community of sponsors dedicated to championing their innovative work.
As a result, these scholars have not only made strides within their specialized fields but have also democratized access to their findings. By making their work readily available to the public, our recipients initiated a powerful "domino effect" of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Their contributions consistently extend far beyond the initial scope of their Research Scholar program awards, creating an enduring legacy of scientific progress.
Dr. Anil Ufuk Batmaz, an Assistant Professor at Concordia University and a past recipient, attests to the program's influence: "This program was one of the best award experiences I have had. Our sponsor at Google was incredibly supportive and always available for high-quality discussions. It was, without a second thought, the most productive research project in our group."
We fundamentally understand that lasting scientific impact hinges on three critical pillars: sustained funding, access to a community of practice, and the cultivation of strong interdisciplinary relationships. Recognizing this, we're embarking on a new chapter. Building upon the incredible achievements of our past recipients, we are proud to announce an investment of $4.7 million to support 87 Research Scholar program recipients. This new funding will empower our recipients to amplify their impact and enable downstream discoveries.
While we remain deeply committed to honoring the work of individual faculty, our strategic focus is now shifting to empower the entire research ecosystem. This means evolving our support beyond just traditional academic institutions to include enabling organizations and collaborative networks, such as Google.org’s $20 million fund for AI and science. With this approach, we aim to increase support for more researchers around the world and catalyze a lasting ripple effect that drives scientific progress forward for years to come.
